As the new year approaches, Dr. Riz and I wanted …

As the new year approaches, Dr. Riz and I wanted to share photos and videos from our walks this year.

Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move. Since that first event in 2005, Walk with a Doc has grown as a grassroots effort, with a model based on sustainability and simplicity.

A doctor gives a brief presentation on a health topic and then leads participants on a walk at their own pace. Walk with a Doc now extends all around the globe with over 500 chapters worldwide, including Walk with a Future Doc chapters led by medical students!

Our first official walk was not well attended. As a matter of fact, a heavy storm rolled into the city right before we began our walk. We quickly made the decision to walk at Northpark mall. But it looked like Dr. Riz and I would be the only ones walking. Then walk in Pat & Dianne Doyle along with Dr. Catherine Gordon and her daughter who went out of their way to show support. Our following walk was at a local farmer’s market. While we enjoyed ending the walk at the market, we did not like putting people at risk by crossing streets and walking on pavement. Our final location ended being within the Village.

Final destination for our now monthly walks is found within The Village. The walking trail is a mile long, very scenic and full of ducks, squirrels and lots of birds. “This is a community that’s awake, alive and inspiring with activity—where residents are up early or unwinding after work with a walk, a run, and where you can always find the beauty of nature and the training partner or workout solitude you seek.” Did you know that in just a few short months we’ve had a total of 53 individuals join us?
