There are studies out there that are trying to measure the health of all of our fisheries throughout the world and the supply of fish. They're seeing that the majority of our fisheries are either fully exploited or overexploited, which means there's no room to feed more people.
According to these studies, the fishing practices in the ocean are absolutely horrific. Many commercial fishing boats have huge nets that scrape against the ocean floor, destroying habitats and hiding places for baby fish who hide from their predators.
Often these fishing boats will pull up all kinds of marine life in that net, and they have to throw a lot of it overboard because they don't have a license for it. So it's becomes something called by kill or bycatch. So they're literally just like wasting a lot of the fish that they're even catching because they're not the target fish they're looking for. The bycatch can consist of marine life such as sea turtles, dolphins, and whales.
Often, when nets go bad or have holes in them, the fishing boats just throw the nets overboard, or if the nets get caught on something, they are left there. These deserted nets are called ghost nets. These nets continue to wreak havoc on marine life. These ghost nets are the leading threat to many marine creatures like whales.
A study looked very closely at the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. They found that most of that plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch was from the fishing industry. Once these plastics eventually break down, they become microplastics that make their way up the food chain.
