Understanding Type 2 Diabetes: Symptoms, Risks, and Preventions

I recently sat down with Dr. Rizwan Bukhari to discuss type 2 diabetes. Although I don't have the disease, it affects millions worldwide. I asked Dr. Riz to join me for a four-part series on Type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Bukhari explains that type 2 diabetes can be silent for many years. Common symptoms include increased thirst and frequent urination. Other symptoms include neuropathy and slow healing. It's important to note that these symptoms can also indicate other health issues, so visiting your doctor if you experience them is essential.

We also discuss risk factors for type 2 diabetes, which include genetics and lifestyle choices such as unhealthy eating and lack of physical activity. It's important to note that just because you have a family history of diabetes, you are not destined to develop the disease. Lifestyle choices can play a significant role in prevention.

Dr. Bukhari emphasizes the importance of regular checkups and blood sugar monitoring to prevent or manage diabetes. Recommendations include getting your A1C levels checked, which gives you an idea of your blood sugar levels over the past few months.

Preventive measures such as regular checkups, blood sugar monitoring, and healthy lifestyle choices can help prevent or manage diabetes. Making small changes over time, such as choosing healthy food options and getting regular exercise, can significantly impact your health.
